Hello September

This is not my picture though I think it is GORGEOUS! I got it from a Google search. As our heatwave continues I am given hope by the turning of the calendar from August to September! It is almost Autumn - my most favorite time of the year! Cooler temperatures are within reach. So are apple cider, a trip to the orchard for apple picking, the pumpkin patch, Halloween, Thanksgiving, National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), and the cheerful, warm lights of Christmas decorations. In other words, LOTS of family fun! Yes, in my opinion we're on the threshold of the most wonderful time of the year! So, I say thank you and goodbye to August; Hello September!

Heat wave and beach days

We are at the beginning of a heat wave here in Southern California! It's supposed to last about a week with the worst of it being in the lower 100's on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. OF COURSE, it's also the first week of school for my kids! UGH! My poor babies! Needless to say though, we are definitely going to fit in a day at the beach and lots of swimming after school. Now thaqt school is resuming I am SO READY for the cooler temperatures of Autumn!

Apple picking

Apple picking is one of those things that I think of as an Autumn activity. We're going to go apple picking soon with longtime friends and I can;t wait! I will definitely take plenty of pictures (the one above isn't mine) and post some of them. I love this time of year.

Happy October
It is my favorite time of year! There are so many fun things that happen in Autumn! The gorgeous picture above is an example of Autumn in New England. It's not my photo but I have many like this - I need to scan them and share them. This is the time of year when I miss New England most. One of these years I'll actually take my family for vacation to Massachusetts and up the New England seaboard into Maine during Autumn.
Until then, we will enjoy the season here in California. We'll go apple picking soon and hopefully see some of the colors depicted above. We'll decorate for Halloween (hopefully tomorrow). We'll also enjoy a lot of family time.

Books Set in Autumn
My October calendar picture is of a gorgeous covered bridge with a classic, cherry red pickup truck about to cross it. The picture automatically evokes images and words of a simpler time in my mind. The picture also got me to thinking of trips I used to take into Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire from Boston when I lived there.
New England is such a gorgeous part of the world and I miss it quite a bit in October (and Spring when the flowers are blooming). This got me to wishing for a really good book where the atmosphere of Autumn is very much a part of the story. Does anyone know of such a book or books? If so, please let me know. In the meantime, enjoy some pictures taken in Boston (the trees) and Vermont (the covered bridge).
ETA: For some reason I cannot attach pictures right now. I will come back and add the pictures when this feature is working again.
